I like to make rustic gates out of wetland coppice materials such as Alder and Goat willow. They are fashioned out of the round wood using a very sharp axe and if I want a finer finish I use a razor sharp draw knife. The rails are morticed into the upright posts and then pegged with hard wood pegs split from a log and then shaped octagonal with axe and knife. The gates are strong and robust / child proof!/ and maintain a pleasing rustic appearence due to the fact that they ´re obviously hand made and they retain all the natural quirks of the timber. Sometimes I like to embelish them with simple carvings. Finally they are treated with  an oil  terpentine mix which helps to waterproof them and brings out the beauty of the wood.
